Can You Transfer or Give Away a Missed Flight Ticket?

Can You Transfer or Give Away a Missed Flight Ticket?

If you can’t travel, giving the ticket to a friend sounds simple. In most cases, airlines don’t allow it.

Tickets are usually non-transferable

The name on the ticket must match the traveler’s ID. Switching to a different person is generally not allowed.

What name changes may allow

Some airlines let you fix small spelling errors, but not replace the passenger.

What you can do instead

  1. Ask for a travel credit. It may be usable later by you.
  2. Ask for a refund if your fare allows it.
  3. Ask for unused taxes and fees on non-refundable tickets.
  4. Check insurance or card benefits if your reason is covered.

Don’t sell tickets informally

A traveler whose ID doesn’t match the ticket can be denied boarding, and you may lose the money.

Tip

If someone else wants to travel, book a new ticket in their name and handle your own ticket separately.
